Course Description
The WCCI Surveyor Course is an intensive five-day hands-on training program designed to prepare water utility personnel, plumbing professionals, inspectors, and cross-connection specialists to properly conduct cross-connection control surveys and evaluate backflow protection requirements in non-public, public, commercial, industrial, and educational facilities. This course combines classroom instruction, real-world field surveys, plan review, regulatory compliance, documentation procedures, and hands-on assembly testing to provide students with practical knowledge they can immediately apply in the field.

What You'll Learn
This course combines classroom instruction, real-world field surveys, plan review, regulatory compliance, documentation procedures, and hands-on assembly testing to provide students with practical knowledge they can immediately apply in the field.
Students will review applicable industry standards including ASSE 1013, ASSE 1015, ASSE 1020, ASSE 1056, and ASME A112 standards while learning how to identify cross-connections, assess degrees of hazard, determine proper backflow protection methods, and document compliance requirements under Wisconsin regulations and water utility authority.
Throughout the course, students will:
Review building plans to identify water outlets and potential cross-connections
Conduct live facility surveys in classroom, commercial, and educational environments
Learn proper documentation and reporting procedures
Evaluate hazard classifications and protection requirements
Study Wisconsin compliance requirements and enforcement procedures
Review installation requirements for backflow prevention assemblies and devices
Analyze established cross-connection control programs from municipalities including Madison, Green Bay, and Milwaukee
Practice testing all four major backflow prevention assemblies in a plumbing lab setting
The course emphasizes real-world application through guided building walkthroughs, group exercises, paired field surveys, and hands-on testing opportunities designed to build confidence and competency in identifying and addressing cross-connection hazards.
The final portion of the course includes a comprehensive written quiz, a survey of a public building, and proctored assembly testing evaluation to reinforce student understanding and practical field readiness.
By the end of the course, students will have a deeper understanding of cross-connection control principles, survey procedures, regulatory compliance, hazard assessment, and proper backflow prevention practices necessary to help protect public drinking water systems.
