Backflow Preventer Refresher

This 6-hour Cross-Connection Control Refresher Course combines classroom instruction, code updates, assembly review, and hands-on testing exercises to reinforce the knowledge and skills necessary to confidently perform cross-connection control work in the field. The course is designed to provide experienced testers, plumbers, and water industry professionals with updated information on current plumbing code requirements, new acceptable backflow prevention options, proper installation practices, and improved troubleshooting techniques.

Students will review the operation, function, application, and limitations of the major backflow prevention assemblies used throughout Wisconsin, including Double Check Valve Assemblies (DCVA), Reduced Pressure Principle Backflow Preventer Assemblies (RP), Pressure Vacuum Breaker Assemblies (PVB), and Spill-Resistant Vacuum Breaker Assemblies (SVB). Through classroom discussion and hands-on workshop activities, students will refresh their understanding of proper testing procedures, common failure conditions, and field troubleshooting practices.

Throughout the course, students will:

• Review the fundamentals of cross-connection control and the importance of protecting public drinking water systems.

• Discuss current plumbing code updates and newly accepted backflow prevention options.

• Review proper installation requirements and applications for new and existing backflow prevention devices.

• Refresh knowledge of Double Check Valve Assemblies, Reduced Pressure Principle Backflow Preventer Assemblies, Pressure Vacuum Breaker Assemblies, and Spill-Resistant Vacuum Breaker Assemblies.

• Review the operation, function, and limitations of each backflow prevention assembly.

• Identify common assembly failures and discuss effective troubleshooting methods.

• Participate in instructor demonstrations of proper backflow testing procedures.

• Practice troubleshooting techniques used to diagnose testing issues and assembly failures.

• Review alternative backflow prevention methods including air gaps, barometric loops, and vacuum breaker tees.

• Discuss real-world field conditions and challenges faced by cross-connection control professionals.

The course emphasizes practical application through instructor-led demonstrations, hands-on testing exercises, and group discussions focused on improving accuracy, efficiency, and confidence in the field. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions, review challenging testing situations, and strengthen their ability to apply current code requirements to real-world installations.

By the end of the course, students will have an updated understanding of cross-connection control requirements, current backflow prevention practices, testing procedures, troubleshooting methods, and installation considerations necessary to continue performing reliable and professional cross-connection control work.
