Course Description
The Cross-Connection Control and Backflow Prevention course offers a 40 hour training which equips you to understand cross-connection and backflow hazards. It meets the backflow prevention tester training requirements. You will learn how to select the right backflow prevention assembly for each application and do hands-on training in testing and repairing backflow prevention assemblies.
Completion of this course and successful completion of the written and hands-on examinations fulfills the training requirements for Wisconsin Cross-Connection Control Test registration or 40 hours of continuing education for the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services for many plumbing and fire sprinkler related credentials.

What You'll Learn
This 40-hour course combines classroom instruction, instructor demonstrations, and extensive hands-on testing to prepare students to become competent and confident Cross-Connection Control Testers. Students will develop a thorough understanding of backflow prevention principles, hydraulic concepts, Wisconsin plumbing regulations, and the proper testing procedures required to inspect and certify backflow prevention assemblies in accordance with state requirements.
Students will study the operation, application, installation requirements, and limitations of Double Check Valve Assemblies (DCVA) ASSE 1015, Reduced Pressure Principle Backflow Preventer Assemblies (RP) ASSE 1013, Pressure Vacuum Breaker Assemblies (PVB) ASSE 1020, and Spill-Resistant Pressure Vacuum Breaker Assemblies (SVB) ASSE 1056. Through classroom discussion and practical exercises, students will learn how each assembly functions, why it is required, and where it should be installed to protect the public water supply.
Throughout the course, students will:
Learn the principles of cross-connection control and the causes of backflow, including backpressure and backsiphonage.
Study Wisconsin Administrative Code requirements governing cross-connection control, backflow prevention, installation standards, testing procedures, and documentation.
Review proper applications for each type of backflow prevention assembly based on the degree of hazard and system conditions.
Understand the operation and internal components of each assembly and how they protect potable water systems.
Observe instructor demonstrations of approved testing procedures before performing each test independently.
Practice testing Double Check Valve Assemblies, Reduced Pressure Principle Assemblies, Pressure Vacuum Breaker Assemblies, and Spill-Resistant Pressure Vacuum Breaker Assemblies using approved differential pressure test equipment and the ASSE one hose method.
Learn to recognize common testing errors, diagnose assembly failures, and interpret test results with confidence.
Complete required backflow testing reports and documentation using accepted industry practices.
Review municipal cross-connection control programs and understand the responsibilities of certified testers, water utilities, property owners, and regulatory agencies.
Apply Wisconsin plumbing code requirements to residential, commercial, industrial, irrigation, boiler, and fire protection systems through real-world examples and classroom discussions.
The course emphasizes practical application through instructor-led demonstrations, daily hands-on laboratory exercises, troubleshooting scenarios, timed testing practice, and group discussions designed to build confidence and proficiency in the field. Students will have multiple opportunities throughout the week to perform complete backflow assembly tests, interpret results, and refine their testing techniques under instructor supervision.
The final portion of the course includes a comprehensive review, a 100-question written examination, and a proctored practical examination requiring each student to successfully test all four approved backflow prevention assemblies while demonstrating proper testing procedures and completing all required documentation.
By the end of the course, students will possess the knowledge, practical skills, and confidence necessary to accurately test, evaluate, and document backflow prevention assemblies in accordance with Wisconsin Administrative Code, helping ensure the continued protection of public drinking water systems.
